Along The Ship Canal
Radioplay soundscape in collaboration with artist Natalie Warham.

Inspired by Jon Raven’s ‘The Manchester Ship Canal’ and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s ‘The Rainy Day’, this piano and sound led narrative traces the journey down the Manchester ship canal to Liverpool during the Industrial Revolution

Performed to a graphical score, the Salford University Contemporary Band was recorded and played back within St Philip’s Church, Salford, while the band accompanied live. This process captured the unique acoustic character of the church, weaving it into the performance.

Imperial War Museum - Big Picture Show

Immersive Installation - December 2023

An immersive installation using oral archives from the Imperial War Museum, featuring a surround sound setup and 20 screens. Visuals were designed and projection-mapped onto 27-foot-high walls, creating a fully enveloping environment.

The chosen theme was pacifism, explored through narratives of peace activism from the Gulf War era. The work aimed to spark discussion on the complexity and varied applications of non-violence during active conflict, an effect amplified by presenting it within a three-dimensional space.

The sound design drew inspiration from the poetry of Pat Arrowsmith, peace campaigner, and Matthew Arnold, creating an atmosphere that complemented the oral histories while inviting interpretive listening.

City Nocturne

A four-part soundscape with accompanying light effects exploring Manchester and Salford in the shadows.

A four-part ambient soundscape inspired by locations in Manchester City Centre and neighbouring Salford. Titled Urban City, Water, Air, and Technological. Each layer blends foley recordings from the studio and the city, forming a looping composition where listeners can adjust the volume of each part using a MIDI controller. This interactivity allows the soundscapes to be experienced independently or in combination, offering a fluid and evolving sonic journey.

The piece explores feelings of isolation and loneliness within a large city, using both sound and light to reflect these themes while maintaining an overarching narrative shaped by the listener’s choices.

Sonata for Saxophone and Sound

Three sound collages, inspired by locations from and around Liverpool and the Wirral, featuring myself on saxophone performing Alan Hovhaness’s Suite for Saxophone and Guitar.

The suite contains three movements, accompanied by family photos taken in Liverpool during the 1950’s, and video footage of the same locations filmed in 2023.

Each sound collage reflects the juxtaposition of the past, present, and the stories of these two locations. This is enhanced by a contemporary classical saxophone piece, field records taken in Liverpool, and archive sounds taken from Liverpool City Council archive.
